ATO stats on SMSF fund balances

What is the proportion of SMSFs with fund balances below $200,000; between $200,000 and $1m and above $1m?

It seems that

  • 22.3% of SMSFs have fund balances less than $200,000;
  • 48.1 % of SMSFs have fund balances between $200,000 and $1,000,000; and
  • 29.6% of SMSFs have fund balances in excess of $1,000,000.

 

The ATO stats provide a more detailed breakdown and show that

  • 17.6% of SMSFs have a fund balance between $1m and $2m
  • 9.9% of SMSFs have a fund balance between $2m and $5m
  • 1.8% of SMSFs have a fund balance between $5m and $10m
  • 0.4% have a fund balance in excess of $10m.

 

Putting it another way there are about (and based upon a population of 530,000 for ease of calculation)

  • 2,100 SMSFs have a fund balance in excess of $10m
  • 9,540 SMSFs have a fund balance in between $5m and $10m
  • 52,470 SMSFs have a fund balance between $2m and $5m
  • 93,280 SMSFs have a fund balance between $1m and $2m
  • 124,020 SMSFs have a fund balance between $500,000 and $1m
  • 130,910 SMSFs have a fund balance between $200,000 and $500,000
  • 27,030 SMSFs have a fund balance between $150,000 and $200,000
  • 28,620 SMSFs have a fund balance between $100,000 and $150,000
  • 27,030 SMSFs have a fund balance between $50,000 and $100,000
  • 35,510 SMSFs have a fund balance less than $50,000.
